Folkestone Film Club is supported by REAL Socialising, providing events, day trips and excursions for groups, companies, clubs, friends and families.

About the Film Club

Our doors open at 10:00am, and free tea, coffee, and biscuits are served until 10:50am. Please note that we charge for tea and coffee after this time. The film starts promptly at 11:00am with no adverts, so please ensure you arrive before 10:50am, especially if you would like to take advantage of our complimentary refreshments.

Each film in the programme is repeated in the smaller screen the following week, so you can catch up on any missed screenings. Spaces are limited for repeat screenings, so we recommend pre-booking or arriving early to avoid disappointment.

Seating is not allocated for Film Club shows. Tickets are available to book several weeks in advance for members, and one week in advance for non-members. After advance booking closes on the day, any remaining tickets are sold on on the door on a first-come-first-served basis.

Beat the queue by booking in advance!

You’ll get priority admission to the Film Club when you book your tickets online. Make sure you have your order confirmation email ready to show on arrival, and come up past the queue. Staff will check you in at the top of the stairs, and you’ll then be able to proceed straight into the auditorium.

Film Club History

The Folkestone Classic Film Club was founded in 2003 by actor Peter Gee and his partner John Swift, who wanted to bring classic and critically acclaimed film screenings to their community. Funding to support the club was generously provided by Screen South.

The club opened its doors to members on Thursday 2nd October 2003, with a showing of Richard Attenborough’s Oh! What a Lovely War (1969). Tragically, just three weeks later Peter died suddenly, aged 60.

John continued to run the club by himself for many years, becoming a well known figure to members and guests. Every week, he carefully set up his table in the cinema foyer, covering it with his yellow tablecloth, preparing to register new members in his ledger. A small crowd gathered around him as members brought him film books, reviews, and other items of interest. He then introduced each film from his lectern at the front of the screen.

John Swift, chairman of the Folkestone Classic Film Club from 2003 to 2015

In early 2015, it became apparent that John’s health was declining. Despite this, he continued to attend the club, taking his time to climb the cinema stairs and politely refusing suggestions that he use the lift. However, he was reluctantly forced to step back from running the club when he was admitted to hospital for treatment. Trusting the cinema to continue the club in his absence, John spent several months convalescing at home.

In the last few weeks of 2015, John was in better health and high spirits. He was looking forward to Christmas, and hoping to return to his position at the Folkestone Classic Film Club in the new year. Unfortunately, it was not to be; John passed away at home on the 21st December, aged 85.

A plaque commemorating John and Peter can be seen in the cinema foyer. The current film club was founded in their memory, and continues in the same spirit of the Folkestone Classic Film Club.
