Screen South and Gabriella Apicella present a special screening of Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed film adapting Isabel Wilkinson’s bestselling book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, followed by a Q&A.

Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Ava DuVernay, ORIGIN chronicles the tragedy and triumph of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson as she explores the mystery of history, the wonders of romance, and a fight for our future.

“Origin is an important film. A film that is changing attitudes, deepening learning, and creating new ways of screen storytelling. From Writer/Director Ava DuVernay it combines the emotional intensity of narrative film with the informational complexity of documentary. For audiences it has proven to be a cathartic and deeply altering experience, connecting us to one another and the history we share. And like any work of this importance, its ambitious potential can only be realised if it is seen.” – Gabriella Apicella

Followed by a pre-recorded Q&A between Origin producer Paul Garnes and local writer Charlotte Forfieh.

Paul Garnes is the producer of Ava DuVernay’s ORIGIN which was filmed across three countries in just 37 days. As the president of DuVernay’s production banner, ARRAY Filmworks, he oversees all aspects of development, physical production, and post-production for the company’s television and film slate.

Since formally joining ARRAY in March 2020, in addition to ORIGIN, Garnes has produced the company’s series COLIN IN BLACK AND WHITE for Netflix, HBO Max’s DMZ and ONE PERFECT SHOT, The CW’s Naomi, NBC’s HOME SWEET HOME, and OWN’s CHERISH THE DAY. Garnes also oversaw the production of DuVernay’s QUEEN SUGAR for seven historic seasons, making the show the longest-running television series centering on a Black family.

Previously, Garnes collaborated with DuVernay to produce the Sundance Award-winning film MIDDLE OF NOWHERE and the Academy Award-winning film SELMA. Garnes has worked as Vice President of Operations and Production for Foxx/King Productions, Head of Production for Simmons-Lathan Media Group, and Vice President and Executive in Charge of Production for the Tyler Perry Company, supervising over 250 episodes of broadcast TV while at the studio. Garnes, a Chicago Columbia College graduate, is currently a board member.

After the event, audience members were invited to Tofts Cafe Bar on Grace Hill, to continue the post-film discussion. Read more at ScreenSouth.org.
